School holidays are abuzz with excitement and creativity. Each holiday period Cairns Art Gallery offers a dynamic program of specialised art workshops to inspire kids aged 4 – 14 years. All workshops are facilitated by experienced artist/teachers who are dedicated to ensuring your child has an enjoyable and satisfying creative experience. Each holidays bring new and imaginative ideas, and every artist takes home a stylish creation to be proud of!

Botanical Still-Life Painting, ages 9-14

Still-life painting allows for a deeper creative appreciation of the objects that surround us. Students will observe and paint their interpretation of a floral and fruit arrangement, allowing them to hone their observational and artistic skills.

Multi Media Environments, ages 4-9

Collage is a fun, hands-on activity that is perfect for introducing young children to the creative freedom of mixed-media works. In this workshop, students will draw inspiration from natural scenes to create their own paper collage world, before adding finer details with ink and pencil.

Acrylic Portraits, ages 4-9

Portrait painting is a great way for children to practice the fundamental skills of effective linework, proportion and colour. Students will sketch and paint a portrait of a person or animal of their choice. Students may choose to bring an image to use as a reference, or simply paint from their imagination.

Observational Drawing in the Gallery, ages 9-14

Students will take a tour through the Simone Arnol seeRED exhibition and choose a work that they would like to centre their drawing upon. This workshop will allow students to develop their observational drawing techniques in the areas of line, shading, space, proportion and texture.

Pastel Still-Life, ages 4-9

Chalk pastels are an easy-to-use and highly effective medium for creating beautiful art. In this workshop, students will be presented with a variety of random objects from which they will complete a still-life piece. This workshop is perfect for introducing young children to drawing, blending and layering in pastels.

Monochromatic Printmaking, ages 9-13

Take a tour through the Gallery and be inspired by the breathtakingly intricate artwork of Joel Sam. Especially tailored for young people, this class will utilise printing foam blocks, which does not require sharp or dangerous tools – making it a safe and accessible alternative to traditional print making. Students will use their imagination to design and carve a scene, before creating their very own monochromatic print.

This workshop is designed to introduce young children to the use of watercolours and mixed-media art. Students will use oil pastels to create a vibrant underwater setting inspired by the Great Barrier Reef, before bringing their artwork to life with watercolour paints.

Watercolours are a simple, versatile and unique medium that can be used to produce vibrant, flowing works of art. This workshop will allow students to practice the fundamental techniques of flat fashing, graded washing and blooming while producing their own colourful self-portrait work, aided by the use of a handheld mirror.

This workshop will give students the opportunity to work with the unique medium of fabric ink to design and hand-paint their own calico tote bag. These materials are long-lasting and water resistant, meaning that students can create a piece of art that will last for years to come.
