Collector's Exhibition

The Artist Showcase is a new online initiative of the Cairns Art Gallery to support regional artists. The Showcase features regular online Collector’s Exhibitions that highlight an exclusive selection of works from an artist’s studio. Works from these exhibitions and specially produced artist merchandise, are available for purchase online and offer collectors the opportunity to directly support our regional artists.
Monique Burkhead is our current Collector’s Exhibition feature artist. Burkhead’s ceramic series Octopus’s Garden is on display as part of the ARTNOW FNQ 2022 exhibition until 12 February 2023.
Burkhead is an emerging artist and her current series of ceramic vessels combine wheel thrown and hand-built forms which are then embellished with hand formed sculptural elements inspired by the rainforests and reefs of Far North Queensland. Although functional in nature many of her recent vessels appear more like ceramic sculptures due to the rich abundance of forms on their surface.
Burkhead’s imagery is inspired by her passion for the natural environment and through her art she hopes to raise an awareness of its fragility and the impacts of climate change.
Burkhead was recently awarded a Cairns Art Gallery Artist Fellowship for her Octopus’s Garden series of works. The Fellowship proudly supported by the Cairns RSL Club will enable Burkhead to produce a new body of work for a solo exhibition at the Gallery.
